Tilganga Eye Hospital (Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology)

Formerly known as the Tilganga Eye Center, the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology (TIO) was established in 1994 as an implementing body of the Nepal Eye Program. Nepal Eye Program is a non-profit, community-based organization officially launched in July 1992.

The main aim of the Nepal Eye Program was to support the prevention and control of blindness in Nepal and the region. TIO is the most popular and the best eye hospital in Nepal as well as in South Asia.

In the early days, TIO maintained a vital international association with The Fred Hollows Foundation (FHF), Australia, and Himalayan Cataract Project (HCP), USA.

Working with FHF, Tilganga Eye Hospital played a key role to help refine and adapt a safe, practical, and affordable technique of intraocular lens (IOL) implant for cataract surgery in developing countries.

Establishing the country’s first eye bank in association with Tissue Banks International, Baltimore, and Lions International was another key achievement of the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology.

Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology has set a new standard for delivering outstanding eye care in the developing world based on its high quality, affordable services, and medical education programs.

Tilganga Eye Hospital (TIO) is known for its affordable and excellent eye care services, training programs for ophthalmologists, optometrists, and ophthalmic assistants, high volume, high-performance work, the Fred Hollows Intraocular Lens Factory, and the region’s first eye bank.

Tilganga and the HCP support eye practices in many hospitals throughout Nepal, as well as in northern India, China, Tibet, and Bhutan.

By restoring the sight of tens of thousands of people each year, Tilganga Eye Hospital makes a significant contribution to the quality of individual and community health throughout the Himalayas.

WHO Collaborating Center
The World Health Organization (WHO) has recognized the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology (TIO) as its Collaborating Centre for Ophthalmology in Nepal. Koirala Lions Center for Ophthalmic Studies (BPKLCOS) is a center of excellence founded and developed by the B.P. Eye Foundation.

Although B.P. Eye Foundation focused on the training of ophthalmic manpower in its early year, the foundation’s focus has shifted to children’s health with impairment.

For the quality eye and ear services to children with impairment, the foundation has established Hospital for Children, Eye, ENT, and Rehabilitation Services (CHEERS) in December 2012, and so far, it has shown positive results in terms of screening disabilities, training, and treatment of treatable disabling conditions.

Following the required treatment, they are trained in activities of daily living, motor skills, concept development, social behavior, communication skills, basics of braille, and sign languages based on an individual plan.

Capacity Building

CHEERS facilitates its staff to keep updated on the latest development and to build their capacities through participation in ongoing Continuing Health Professional Education (CHEP) programs either at the hospital or other venues.

Various professional development programs have been organized over the years. These include programs related to low vision, blindness, retina, orthoptics, Vitro-retina, pediatric ophthalmology, ENT, surgeries, basic first aid, and administration management.
